பிரிடிஷ் கொலம்பியாவில் தொடரும் தீவைப்பு சம்பவங்கள்!

ஏற்கனவே கடுமையான காட்டுத்தீ பருவத்தை எதிர்கொண்டுள்ள பிரிட்டிஷ் கொலம்பியா மாகாணத்தில், அண்மையில் பதிவாகியுள்ள பல்வேறு தீ வைப்பு (Arson) சம்பவங்கள் மீண்டும் கவலையை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளன. இதில் வான்கூவர் தீவு பகுதிகளில் இடம்பெற்ற சம்பவங்களும் அடங்குகின்றன.

கெலோவ்னாவின் Knox Mountain பகுதியில் தீ வைத்ததாக குற்றத்தை ஒப்புக்கொண்ட 49 வயதான Robert Austin Teal என்பவருக்கு 21 மாத சிறைத்தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

பல இடங்களில் தீ மூட்டியதாகவும், தீ வேகமாகப் பரவுவதற்காக கிளைகள் மற்றும் இலைகளை தீயில் சேர்த்ததாகவும் போலீசார் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர். வறண்ட காலநிலை மற்றும் மாறுபடும் காற்றின் காரணமாக தீ வேகமாகப் பரவியதால், அது மிகப்பெரிய காட்டுத்தீயாக மாறக்கூடும் என்ற அச்சம் ஏற்பட்டதாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

வெர்னனில் ஆகஸ்ட் 4ஆம் தேதி ஏற்பட்ட இரண்டு புல்வெளித் தீ சம்பவங்கள் தொடர்பாக, West Kelowna பகுதியைச் சேர்ந்த 33 வயதான Mariah Banning Baer மீது ஆறு குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் பதிவு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இந்தத் தீ சம்பவங்கள் வேண்டுமென்றே ஏற்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என RCMP விசாரணையாளர்கள் சந்தேகிப்பதாக தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

அவர் மீது மூன்று தீ வைப்பு குற்றச்சாட்டுகள், தீப்பற்றக்கூடிய பொருளை வைத்திருந்ததாக ஒரு குற்றச்சாட்டு, குற்ற நோக்கத்துடன் முகத்தை மறைத்ததாக ஒரு குற்றச்சாட்டு மற்றும் probation நிபந்தனையை மீறியதாக ஒரு குற்றச்சாட்டு என ஆறு குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் சுமத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.

மே மாதத்தில் Coombs Country Candy அருகே இந்தச் சம்பவம் இடம்பெற்றதாக Port Alberni RCMP தெரிவித்துள்ளது. சம்பவ இடத்தில் சந்தேகநபர் ஒருவர் கைது செய்யப்பட்டதாகவும், அவர் தொடர்ந்து காவலில் இருந்ததாகவும் போலீசார் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.

B.C. Wildfire Service புள்ளிவிவரங்களின்படி, 2016 முதல் 2025 வரை பிரிட்டிஷ் கொலம்பியாவில் 560 காட்டுத்தீ சம்பவங்கள் “arson” அல்லது “suspicious” என வகைப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இது அந்த பத்து ஆண்டுகளில் பதிவான சுமார் 15,000 காட்டுத்தீ சம்பவங்களில் 3.8% ஆகும்.

எனினும், “suspicious” என வகைப்படுத்தப்பட்ட ஒவ்வொரு தீயும் நிரூபிக்கப்பட்ட தீ வைப்பு என்று அர்த்தமல்ல என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

அதேபோல், சமீபத்தில் கைது செய்யப்பட்டவர்கள் அல்லது குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் அனைவரும் நீதிமன்றத்தில் குற்றவாளிகள் என நிரூபிக்கப்படும் வரை சட்டப்படி நிரபராதிகளாகவே கருதப்படுகின்றனர்.

வெப்பமான மற்றும் வறண்ட காலநிலையில் வேண்டுமென்றே ஒரு சிறிய தீயை ஏற்படுத்துவதுகூட மிகப்பெரிய விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்தக்கூடும்.

தீயணைப்பு வீரர்கள், விமானங்கள் மற்றும் அவசர உபகரணங்கள் வேறு இடங்களில் இருந்து திருப்பி அனுப்பப்பட வேண்டிய நிலை ஏற்படலாம். குடியிருப்புகள் ஆபத்தில் சிக்கலாம். மக்கள் வெளியேற்றப்படலாம்.

British Columbia At a time when the province is already facing another challenging wildfire season, several recent arson cases have raised renewed concerns, including incidents on Vancouver Island.

In Kelowna, 49-year-old Robert Austin Teal was sentenced to 21 months in jail after pleading guilty to arson.

Police said he was seen starting fires in multiple locations and adding branches and leaves to help the flames spread. Dry conditions and shifting winds raised concerns that the fires could grow into a much larger wildfire.

In a separate Knox Mountain incident, Andrew James Dent has been charged with arson and resisting a peace officer.

In Vernon, 33-year-old Mariah Banning Baer of West Kelowna is facing six charges in connection with two grass fires reported on August 4.

RCMP investigators believe the fires may have been intentionally set.

The charges include three counts of arson, possession of incendiary material, disguising her face with intent, and breach of probation.

In Port Alberni, Vancouver Island, a 38-year-old man has been charged with two counts of arson in connection with alleged brush fires along the Alberni Highway near Coombs Country Candy.

Port Alberni RCMP said the incident occurred in May. A suspect was arrested at the scene and was reported to remain in custody.

According to B.C. Wildfire Service statistics, between 2016 and 2025, 560 wildfires in British Columbia were classified as “arson” or “suspicious.”

That represents about 3.8% of nearly 15,000 wildfires recorded in the province over that ten-year period.

However, it is important to note that a fire classified as “suspicious” does not necessarily mean arson has been proven.

Likewise, anyone who has been arrested or charged is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.

During hot and dry conditions, deliberately starting even a small fire can have serious consequences.

Firefighters, aircraft and emergency equipment may have to be diverted from other emergencies. Homes can be threatened, and residents may be forced to evacuate.

A small grass or brush fire can quickly become a major wildfire when conditions are hot, dry and windy.
